The girls just had their 10th birthday party. We learned some things. When you have a birthday party in Africa, always plan for more children than you invite! We had a friend of one of the guests come to the home part of the party and a little brother stay for the restaurant.

Expect guests to have a looser interpretation of the start time of the party. The party started at 5:00 at our home. We planned to drive everyone to the restaurant at 6. Well, 2 of the guests (and friend) came at 3:00. 2 more of the guests arrived as we were pulling out to go to the restaurant. And the last guest (and little brother) arrived 1.5 hours later at the restaurant. Good thing we left a message with our guard!!

All the kids had a great time. The power went off at the restaurant so we had dinner by candle-light. The kids all told scary stories about witches. The weird thing was they were telling about things they had seen, or had heard first hand from friends or family. There is a very strong belief in the power of witchcraft.

There was one other table of guests during dinner, but they left before dessert and we handed out noise makers. We are very well known at Modi’s and very well liked, so they put up with a little bit of noise.

Hard to believe my babies will be 10!!

The Jacksons with some of the kids in David's neighbourhood. It seems that all kids in Malawi strike a "karate" pose when you take their picture. Makes you rethink blaming TV. Posted by Picasa
